Seriously guys, this is something extremely basic (not something one should
have to make changes in the registry in, and so forth).

The majority of application errors have nothing to do with the installation
of the application but rather third-party conflicts which are primarily
add-ins.
A quick test is start Word or Excel in Safe Mode. To do so, hold Ctrl while
starting the application. Continue holding Ctrl until you are prompted to
start in Safe Mode. If the applications function correctly then the issues
you are encountering have nothing to do with the installation itself.

I have this problem and opening in safe mode is ok. So what do I do. I have
uninstalled and re-installed Word but it does not help.

This solution may work for some however it does not work for me. All office
applications crash on save whether in safe mode or not. So it is not plug-in
related.
