Archived from groups: microsoft>public>word>customization>menustoolbars (more info?)

I am wondering why I do not have any AutoCorrect words in my AutoCorrect
list when I change my language default to English Canada. The smiley face
items are there, but no words. The AutoCorrect name at the top of the
window says "AutoCorrect (UK)" - presumably because that is the closest
match to English Canada, but the words are not there. Also if I save an
AutoCorrect entry, it seems to matter which language my document is using
for proofing. Are there 2 ACL files?

Thanks,

Ricki

Formatted autocorrect options are stored in the normal template. Only
unformatted ones are stored in ACL files. ACL files are created for each
installed language.

Thanks for your reply. How can a user tell which file is for which
language? Is 1033 US English? Do words get installed in the language ACL
file depending on which language the user is using in the document at the
time of creating the AutoCorrect entry? Does it depend on regional
settings? And why would there be no words listed in the UK file, only
smiley faces?

Thanks again,

Ricki

1033 is both US and UK English (as well as Canadian); there are different
codes for Australian and NZ English.

Thanks for the information. I have used Canadian English as mydefault
language for many versions of Word but have never seen the AutoCorrect
dialog box referred to anything other than UK. My questions:

Is there a different list of words for the various languages and if so,
where are they stored?

Is there some way that the US list of words is installed and not the UK list

Why would the smiley symbols show in the UK list when no words are listed?

If formatted ACL words are saved in normal.dot(x), are they under AutoText
or Quick Parts?

Thanks again,

Ricki

Tony Jollans has answered most of your questions in his parallel post. I'll just
answer the last one here:

When formatted AutoCorrect words are saved in Normal.dot (or Normal.dotm, not
..dotx), they are part of the list in the AutoCorrect Options dialog, which is
neither AutoText nor Quick Parts. The only distinction between the sources (.acl
files vs. Normal.dotm) in that dialog is whether the "Plain text" option button
or the "Formatted text" option button is activated.

Thank you both, Jay and Tony, for you answers. I have a better
understanding of ACL files now and hope I can fix my problem.

Take care,

Ricki

US English is 1033; UK English is 2057; Canadian English is 4105. One file
should exist for each language you have ever edited in, not just for
installed languages.

If an ACL file for a language doesn't exist, what happens depends on the
languages you have installed; I think all versions of Office come with
English (although I'm not sure about 2007 Far East versions). The (English)
version comes with a basic English ACL file which is used as a basis for all
variants of English. A US (1033) file is created by default; when you use
Canadian English, a 4105 file will also be created based on the built-in
file; when you use UK English, a 2057 file will be created based on the
built-in file; when you use, say, Brazilian Portuguese, a 1046 file wil be
created but, unless you happen to have installed a Brazilian Portuguese
language pack, there will be no built-in file to base it on, and all it will
contain will be the smiley faces.

The file used (and updated if you add plain text autocorrects) should be the
one for the langauge at the current selection or insertion point. If the
Autocorrect dialog says UK English, the language should be UK English. If
the language is Canadian English, the dialog should say English (Canada).
Word has no concept (AFAIK) of variants of English being 'close' - if it
wants English, the only fallback, if there is one at all, is US English.

If you are not getting autocorrects, your ACL file (for the language) is
either (almost) empty or corrupt. It is just a text file and you can take a
look at it. If all it has are the smileys, try deleting it and Word should
create a new one next time you edit in the langauge. If that fails, although
I can't think why it should, you could try creating your own by copying the
1033 file - assuming that one works, of course - and renaming the copy as
4105.

Tony
