Post subject: Word 2003 Styles
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>word>docmanagement (more info?)

In Word 2003, if I open a new blank document, create a new style, and choose
the check box to "Add to template," the style appears in subsequent new blank
documents I create. Question: Is it also supposed to appear in documents I
create later that are based on other templates (not the blank document
template)? I was told by a collegue that the style should appear in other
templates as well, but in my tests I haven't been able to make that happen.
Thank you for any info.

I believe, at least in recent versions Word, that another template file (not
Normal.dot) is used to generate some kinds of files. If Word were to copy
Normal.dot, the all the AutoText, toolbars, macros and styles it contains would
be in the new template - and that's usually not what you want when you create a
new template.

You can use the Organizer to copy styles from the Normal.dot to any new template
you create. Tools/Templates and Add-ins/Organize.
