Archived from groups: microsoft>public>excel>querydao (more info?)

Hi there,
I have an Excel 2003 user who is using a spreadsheet that pulls data
from our SQL server.

When he opens it and refreshes that data it is fine, it pulls the
current data, but when he tries to edit the query, the Query Wizard does
not appear, he can see it on the task bar, but when he switches focus
using task manager everything is greyed out and nothing works.

I have tested the file from my computer and it is fine, which suggests a
problem with his machine or installation. Does anyone have any ideas?

Cheers,

Steve

I would see if he can:
- create a new query in Excel from any database on his machine
- if not - try repairing Microsoft Office
- create a new query in Excel from the same database as is giving the
problem
- if not - check he has appropriate access to the database

Hi Bill,
We created a blank spreadsheet and clicked on New Database Query and
chose query dialogue box does not appear, well, its on the task bar, but
not clickable. When we use task manager to switch to it the box appears,
but we can't select or click on anything.

We have reinstalled MS Query but that didn't help. I will try the repair
function and see if that helps.

Repair has not worked, infact whilst installing it was looking for a cab
that isn't on the install CD. We found the cab on the PC so burnt it to
disk and allowed it to carry on.

I didn't quite follow that - what did you choose?

Did you get to the stage of choosing a database?
If so, did you choose the same database as was causing the problem, or
a different one?

If you chose a different database, it seems likely to be some
configuration issue rather than a problem with the individual workbook
or the database it is accessing.

I'm running out of ideas!

Hi Bill,

1. Open blank workbook
2. Data | Import External Data | New Database Query

All that happens is task bar has the Chose Data Source but you can not
select it. The only way to make it appear is to go into Task Manager and
Switch Task, but when it gains focus it is greyed out and nothing is
selectable. The only thing you can do is End Task it to go away.

Or

1. Open existing workbook
2. Refresh All (this works, data is updated)
3. Data | Import External Data | Edit Query

Connecting to data source box appears then disappears, the task bar has
Microsoft Query but again its not selectable, same as above.

We have tried un-installing Microsoft Query and trying again but that
does not work, and we have also applied the latest service pack, again,
does not work.

The same datasource and workbook works on all other computers on the
network apart from this one computer.

We have run out of ideas too, its really strange. Our only last option
is to un-install office and start again, but even then I am not
convinced it will work, but its last hope. I have never seen anything
like this, and nor has the internet by the looks of things.

Thanks for trying Bill, I appreciate it.
