My computer installed a number of updates overnight & now I find problems in
Microsoft Word. The cursor will select things on the ribbons, but I can't
highlight text with it. I can type in a document, but I can't use the mouse
to do any kind of editing. My mouse works perfectly in every other program.
This is a widespread problem, since I read many other people on the web who
have just experienced the same thing with this update.

After an hour on the phone getting to the right person (very maddening!)
Here is how to fix this:
In start, type regedit. Then find this folder
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Word\Data
Rename the folder "olddata" and close the registry editor.
Try Microsoft Word. That should fix it. Word will create a new Data
folder. The updates corrupted the old one.

I tried that fix, but my computer would not let me rename the folder. Any
suggestions?

Can you delete it? You should be able to.

Thank you so much, I should have looked here before reinstalling. Making the
change to the registry did the trick.
