Post subject: Unable to edit & Word 2007 Crashes Upon Exit - Every time!
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>word>application>errors (more info?)

I have been using Word 2007 (and Vista) for overt a year. Since the middle of
last week, when I open a file I can scroll through it but I am unable to edit
anything. When I close the file and exit Word, the app crashes. Every time.

I can't think of anything I did to create this problem with one possible
exception. I needed a word (2003, I think) file from my archives for a
project I was working on. I did open this file to do some routine cutting &
pasting. Nothing more. Somewhere along the way I did get the message asking
if I wanted to save my normal template. I suspect, without thinking, I
clicked yes. I can't think of anything elese I unusual I did last week,

Another clue: I see the words "Table Tools" in the title bar, above "Design"
on the Home menu.

I tried repairing Word. I completely uninstalled Office 2007, rebooted
things and then reinstalled Office 2007. I deleted my normal template. I
still have the problem and am out of ideas to try.

This is a showstopper for me and is really mucking up my work! I would
appreciate any suggestions of how to get back to normal.

Thanks folks, Rich Bohn

Sounds like a bad third party add-in. Test by running in Safe Mode. From
Start, Run (Winkey+R), type in

winword /a

and press enter. Open a document and test for editing and closing now. If it
is OK now, then you have installed something that has placed an incompatible
add-in in Word/Office.

See how to find add-ins

Hi,

Like always, I ask you and others users with the same question : do you have
bougth a HP photosmart printer? If yes, just try to unselect the HP printer
as the one by default. Selecte another printer by default. Dont forget when
you print to select the HP photosmart each time.

Hope that's help you.

Plotin:

Thank you so much! I've been having this problem for months and it was
driving me crazy. Sure enough, once unchecked my HP Photosmart printer as my
dault, the crashes stopped!

Cheers!

Same problem, same solution. Thanks, Plotkin. In fact, if you have opted in
to Microsoft's crash analysis/data submission program, a window now pops up
telling you that it is a HP printer driver problem and gives you a worthless
HP website link. It would be much nicer if it just told you how to fix it,
i.e., change your default printer from the HP PhotoSmart printer.

I do not have a HP photosmart printer. I have an old HP OfficeJet K80 MFP.
It has not caused any problems in past. When I reset default printer to
Adobe PDF, I can print, but I still can't save the Word documents without
crashing. Any ideas?

As said before, it's the HP printer driver that is at fault. Have been
drilling HP for two years to get it sorted. Worth checking to see if they
have a new driver: otherwise it is a new printer (and don't get an HP).
