Post subject: Unable to change in HTML messages
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>word>mail (more info?)

I am in the midst of creating some French drafts/templates for HTML messages
using Word as my editor. Since I am creating several French drafts/templates,
I set the language to French in Word, and clicked on Default to make the
default language change to Normal.dot. However, after creating a
draft/template, I notice that in the source for the HTML message, near the
top there is the line <body lang=EN-US ...> and every new paragraph begins
with <span lang=FR>. Even though I have changed the default language for new
messages (i.e. body) to French, Word seems to be applying the language change
as direct formatting in each paragraph. Is there a way to change <body
lang=EN-US ...> to <body lang=FR ...> so that the language property isn't
applied to each paragraph?

PS: I am using Word/Outlook 2002.

You may want to check with the folks in the Outlook discussion group through the link below. If Outlook is using NormalEmail.dot
then you may also need to make the change there as well.

To see what Word alone is doing with the coding, create a document in Word then use File=>Web Page Preview then right click in the
browser and use View=>Source.

Hi Bob,

Thank you. I followed your steps "to see what Word alone is doing with the
coding", and the French language is still applied as direct formatting even
though it was set as the default language for the document in Normal.dot. I
think this issue has to do with Word. I guess it's either a quirk, or it's
done intentionally that way.

Hi HP,

In Start=>Programs=>Microsoft Office=>Microsoft Office Tools
using the Langauge Settings tool, what is the primary editing language set on and do you also have French included in the editing
language list?

If it's included does it say (limited support) after the language name?

What does the definition for the style you're using have for language in Word?
