Is there any way to alter the template used for e-mailing a document from
inside Word when Outlook is the mail client. In particular, I want to have
the default to be that a read receipt will be requested.

If you use the second method in the article "How to send an email from Word
using VBA" at:

http://www.word.mvps.org/FAQs/InterDev/SendMail.htm

you can include a line of code to request the read receipt.
