Style separator hides numbered items in cross-reference list

I'm using Word 2003 but testing to prepare for a migration to Word 2007. In
Word 2003, I've set up an outline numbering system for documents that
combines Heading styles with other styles that are linked to (i.e., "based
on") the Heading styles. For example, Heading 1 creates "Section 1." with no
title, and "Heading 1 Title" creates "Section 1. My Title." followed by a
style separator and then Body Text. Cross-referencing works fine, because
both the numbered paragraphs that are formatted with the Heading 1 style and
those formatted with the Heading 1 Title style appear in the cross-reference
dialog under "Numbered items."

The problem arises when I open a document formatted this way in Word 2007.
None of the Heading 1 Title paragraphs appear under Numbered items. I tried
saving the DOC as a DOCX, and this made no difference.

I've traced the problem to the style separator. It appears to be preventing
the paragraphs from appearing as numbered items.

My question is: Is there a way to force numbered paragraphs that use a
style separator to appear in the cross-reference dialog?

You could try dropping back to the older method of using a Hidden paragraph
mark instead of a style separator and see if that works. See
