Style bug and Style compatibility issues

What font is that? Do you see it in Word options > Advanced > Font
substitution (about halfway down the list)?

Thank you for your prompt responses, Suzanne and Klaus, though when I
received the notifications and clicked on the link, a blank web page came up
every time. I decided to take the time to check on my posting, but only now
have I found the time to do that.

Anyway, to answer your questions ...
First, Suzanne's: the style is a "linked type," here used to
character-format a word, different from the style used for the paragraph this
word is in, so that, when I select it and press Ctl-spacebar, it changes to
the paragraph style (Times New Roman, NotAllCaps). When I select it again and
press the Quick Style button in the Gallery, it reverts to Courier New
AllCaps, even though the "preview" on the QS button, as well as the
specification under "Modify Style" for that style, are in NotAllCaps.
To answer Klaus's: The font is Courier New. When I do as you advise, I get
the message, "No font substitution is necessary. All fonts used in this
document are available."

You shouldn't be using a linked style to apply a character format. Instead,
use a character style.

Word won't let me change the style type to "character only": I would have to
go and create a new style and replace the many occurrences of this style with
the new one. Is that really necessary? How does it address the problem at
hand? I have other style of this type which do not have this problem.

All the "linked type" does is it makes the style work both as a character
and a paragraph type, respectively depending on whether you select a part of
(a) the paragraph, or (b) the whole paragraph or just leave the cursor in the
paragraph without selecting anything, before you click on that style. What
does that have to do with the AllCaps hangup?

I'm thinking maybe this has to do with the existing connection of this
document with the Word 2003 .dot template file, because when I create a new
file with a copy of the same Quick Style set, the problem goes away. However,
copying and pasting the entire old document to the new document carries that
mysterious connection along with it. Any idea how to sever that connection to
the .dot template w/out losing the actual styles?

OK, I tried a number of things and finally got it to work. I'm not sure which
of these actually had an effect, but the last thing I tried was the following.

I temporarily renamed the problematic style (right-click the QS button and
select "Rename..."). Then, I created a new style with the same name as the
original, and having exactly the same specifications. Then, I right-clicked
the renamed style button in the Gallery and selected "Select All __
Instance(s)". Then, I selected the new style from the Styles pane to change
the style of all instances to the new style (identical in all respects to the
old style). Then, I went to the Manage Styles window to delete the old style.
Fianlly, I added the new style to the QS Gallery and overwrote the changes to
the QS set template file I had earlier created. Whew!!

I saved, closed, and reopened the document: not only is the new style well
behaved but also that connection to the old template has now disappeared,
such that when I click Change Styles, the menu now shows the option "Set as
Default", w/out "for __ template" following it. I knew that had something to
do with it, though didn't know how to make it go away.

I had earlier also saved the .dot template as a .dotx template and, then,
deleted the .dot template from the .../Templates directory, but that alone
produced no effect.
