I would bet that your laptop has a Synaptics Touchpad utility.

If so, I wold like to suggest one or two steps.

It may be possible to de-sensitize the Touchpad by opening the utility and
decreasing the sensitivity and other settings.
That may fix the busted spell checker ( I know it seems like an odd
solution), but you have to restart for the changes to take effect.

If that does not work, I'd suggest visiting the Dell Support site and
downloading the most current Synaptics Touchpad Driver/Utility and install it.

Techs that have followed the traditional troubleshootig on this issue are
missing some VERY critical observations.
1. If the proofing tools were broken the Spelling and Grammar Dialog Box
(SGDB) would not open at all.
2. If the Dictionary and or language settings were wrong or missing, it
would not be making suggestions.
3. If the "Undo Edit" button is visible, then the SGDB believes there has
been some traffic through the dialog box because the undo edits button is
ONLY visible once the mis-spelled word has been changed INSIDE the SGDB.
4. If the "Undo Edit" buttong returns on its own after being clicked by the
user, AGAIN this can ONLY happen if the SGDB senses a change to the
mis-spelled word inside the SGDB.

We believe it is possible that numbers 3 and 4 are happening due to system
traffic related to an overly sensitive/overly active touchpad.

I have already fixed one Dell Vostro by detuning the touchpad.

I had done a ground up clean installation of XP Pro so the Synaptics Touch
Pad utility was not installed. I did try installing and desensitizing the
touchpad but no joy. Still haven't figured out what the problem is Sad.

I have tried all this too.
I just spent over an hour on the phone with Dell. Their final call is to
reinstall the OS.
if you have any other ideas I would love to hear them.

Markesia,

I need to confirm your symptoms.
You are the first confirmed report of this issue occuring in a model other
than a laptop.

The symptoms we are chasing are:
1. Type a mispelled word and the proofing tools see the word and underline
it (if that feature is enabled)
2. Right click on the word and proofing tools finds and makes suggestions
which CAN be selected.
3. However, if you open the Spelling and Grammar Dialog Box (SGDB) and the
proofing tools has still found and makes suggestions, but they are ALL grey
and cannot be selected. Additionally, the "Ignore Once" button is gone and
the "Undo Edit" button is visible.
4. Additionally, if you click the "Undo Edit" button, the SGDB BRIEFLY
enables the suggestions, but then very quickly disables them and the "Undo
Edit" button returns without any input from the user.

I want to be specific that you're encountering all these symptoms because we
have found and already isolated resolutions for a few varients of this issue
which do not have all four of these criteria.

Markesia, et al,

Try right-clicking the misspelled word. Although it's a pain to do if you
have lots of misspellings, it's a work around until the cause & resolution
are found.

Hi Bilbo:

Thanks for the reply. I have looked high and low for my case number and
can’t find it.

My spell check has started working again. However, anything underlined in
green will not check. Spelling and grammar worked for about a month when I
first got the computer. It has come to life a couple of times over 10 months
for a few minutes, only to die again. Now, it seems to be back and is staying
(two weeks so far) except for grammar check.

The computer was bought from one of these computer shacks that installs
everything themselves. I have no idea what drivers for what or who are
installed where or when. I assume the guy knew what he was doing. They are
not a fly-by-night company. I actually called him first and he had no clue.

Questions:

OEM? Which one? Dell? Some device manufacturer? Software Company? Microsoft?
Computer Shack guy?

Are you saying that the computer may be incompatible with XP? Or some part
of my computer is incompatible?

Do you have a specific question about a specific driver version or hardware
type that I can get an answer to?
