Post subject: Relative Hyperlinks in MHTML documents Archived from groups: microsoft>public>word>web>authoring (more info?)
I have been doing up a webpage in Word 2007 for an assignment and, due to
assignment stipulations, have had to save the webpage in .mhtm format(Single
File Web Page). I am trying to use hyperlinks to link to other webpages in
..mhtm format. The collection of webpages needs to be use relative hyperlinks
so that it doesn't matter what computer it is on, the links all work.
Whenever I try to hyperlink the pages they appear to become absolute
hyperlinks. I know this because I have tried moving the folder the webpages
are contained in and the hyperlinks still point to the old location.
All the pages are saved into the same directory. I have browsed the
microsoft website for relative and absolute hyperlinks and the only article I
have found that could account for them being absolute hyperlinks is
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/903163. I have made sure that the check box
is ticked which should allow for relative hyperlinks.
I can get relative hyperlinks to work in .doc, .docx and .html formats but
not in .mhtm\.mhtml format.
I have tried the same procedures on another computer with Word 2003 with
exactly the same results.
Can anyone tell me how I might get this to work? Or even if you get the same
results.
Hope I have given enough information to work with. My brain is kind of
frazzled from trying to work this out. If I have missed anything feel free
to leave a post and I will try to answer your query.

Hi Orzoth,
The Web Archive is an MHTML encoding (RFC2257). If I recall correctly the spec for .MHT file calls for relative links to be mapped
to absolute links so that content within the .MHT (basically a web page equivalent of a zip file) can be found and work as the
graphics etc are part of the archive.
You may be able to open the source of the .MHT file (View source in Internet Explorer, for example) and modify the links and resave.
Are all MHT's going to be at the same 'level' (folder) in the new location or ??? Do you have a link to the site where you're
working with the .MHT files? What is the reason that you need to work in .MHT format? (there may be other alternatives).
Note that not all browsers (or web/file servers) understand (support) the Mime Encoded HTML file format (even Word 2000, that first
introduced this could not reopen an .MHT file until a supplemental converter was issued by Microsoft) and even the Windows version
and patch level can make a difference in getting an MHT file to work as expected.
