Problems with Batch Conversion to HTML

Hello,

I have a large number of documents that I want converted to HTML Format. I
know Word is not the best way to generate web pages but for this activity, it
should be adequate.

However, I do not want to have to go in and edit over 100 documents and do a
"Save As" so I tried to use the "Batch Conversion Wizzard".

I entered all the information and tried the wizzard out for only 2 files.
The system hung and after a long time I got a CLEARCASE message "The file is
under source control and has read-only attributes". I have Clearcase on my
machine, but these files have never been in clearcase and they are not
read-only. I can open them and save them in the same directory as I used for
the Batch Wizzard.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I'd hate to have to do all of this by
hand everytime a document is updated.

You are aware how badly anything beyone Word97 is going
to bloat your files, right? Word might make a lot more
work out of it than you expect when you see all your
personal information in the HEADs.
What version of Word?

It's only a Preview 1.0 release, but you might look at
NVU (NView) at nvu.com. It's post Beta, open source,
and not quite ready for prime time but for text files
it should work perfectly and is free. It'll still be
some work, but at least it doesn't write bloated and
xml code as Word does. And, it's pretty much CSS2
compliant if you go that way. I only typically have up
to 7 files open at a time, but the limit is much
higher, probably memory constrained.

If your wish to convert is simply for distribution to
other machines, try OpenOffice(.Org). It'll write PDF
files and it's a free app. It works just like Word but
doesn't create bloated HTML like Word. Oh, it's a huge
download for the whole suite; not sure you can download
just Write, the part you'd need.

If you end up with common problems, NoteTAB is a great
program for doing Search & Replace on multiple files
all at once. You can open as many files as you want
and operate on one or all at the same time. It also
has an HTML template. I forget their adress; google
for it; it's easy to find.
