Continue Numbering after headings

Hi all,

thanks again for your reply. Everyone was correct with their
guidance. I should have specified that I was using Word 2007 (sorry
about that). I was looking for the place to link styles with levels
and I simply couldn't find it - there is no Format menu in 2007. Of
course now that I have found it the problem is solved, and I am left
wondering how I could have missed it in the first place. It was only
with your guidance I found it though - so thanks again and keep up the
good work.

although Shauna uses headings in the examples, the styles don't have to be
heading styles; or, if heading styles are used, they don't have to be
formatted to look like headings.

Level 1 must be using an auto number set within the dialog, Level 2 must be
set to restart numbering after Level 1, and both styles must be linked to
the appropriate level of the *same* outline-numbered list.

I just had this problem myself, and Suzanne Barnhill helped me
solve it. Briefly, I did the following.

1. Create a new paragraph style called NumPara, based on "(no style)".

2. Set outline numbering for headings, by putting the cursor on the
first "Heading 1" style in the document, then using the command
Format>Style> Modify >Numbering..., then choose Outline Numbering,
then click the Customise button.

3. In the "Customize Outline Numbered List", click the 'More' button,
so that you can explicitly associate hierarchical levels with Word
styles. Normally each Heading style is associated with the corresponding
level, e.g. Heading 1 with level 1, etc.

4. Set the number in the 'Level' list to 1, specify the Number format,
then repeat for each heading level that you want to use, each time
specifying the level, the number format, and the style name.
You can decide to have Heading 1 display a number, but not Heading 2,
if you wish.

5. At some level, e.g. 5, set the style to 'NumPara' instead of the more
typical Heading style. The default format will be 1.1.1.1.1. change this
to remove the middle digits, leaving only the first (Level 1, Heading 1),
and the last (NumPara sequence).

You may also wish to set the alignment and indentation to 0cm for all
heading levels.

I'm not sure why you did it this way, since the more straightforward way is
just to use Level 2 for your numbered paragraphs.
