I have a client in my office who is trying to copy a worksheet from one
spreadsheet to another. He highlights all the cells, right clicks and
copies. He then opens a new speadsheet and click A1. Then he right click and
chooses Paste Special. A option menu appears but it is not a normal option
menu. There is no Check boxes.. The dialog box looks like a standard pull
down menu with options I ahve never seen before. I can open a blank sheet
and add formulas. I do the same procedure and with the same results. It
doesn't happen all the time but it is very frequent. I run a reinstall of
office and the condition has not changed. Has anyone had a similar issue and
did you solve the problem?

Options like:
Microsoft Office Excel Worksheet Objet
Picture
Bitmap
MS Excel 8.0
etc.
??

When you copy from one instance of excel to another, this occurs. You can
either open your destination in the same instance of excel or you can choose
the 'correct' option from the list you see. What are you trying to paste?

They are working in 2 seperate instances of Excel and that is the exact menu.
The person is copying engineering numbers for manufacturing barges.

So if I just open from the same copy it will be fine?

If you copy within the same instance, the "regular" past special menu that
you're used to should show up. Depending on what you're trying to copy/paste
you can select a number of options from this list or you may want to open the
two spreadsheets in the same instance of Excel (instead of opening another
instance, just click File->Open->YourFile). I hope this helps!

While the "2nd instance of Excel" explanation helped me, and technically applies, i've been able to paste special between two instances of Excel in the past.

The reason I did not see the expected "paste special" options was because i was copying from a spreadsheet that was opened from an EMBEDDED OBJECT in MS Word 2003.

When I saved the embedded spreadsheet to the hard drive and re-opened from Excel, the expected "paste special" options were available.

Hope that helps someone else.
