Does instant search, search within attachments? For example if you have an
email with a PDF attachment, will it search the PDF attachement for a
particular word, phrase, number etc?

Yes. You can even expand the search panel and use the Add Criteria button to
add the condition "Attachment Contains" to a search.

It will search within attachments but you'll need to have an indexer
"plugin" installed which can read pdf-file. Acrobat Reader ships one but
that one still doesn't work properly on 64-bit IIRC. Of course the pdf needs
to contain actual words as well and isn't just an image or something. You
should have no issues with Word, Excel and PowerPoint attachments though.

AFAIK, Windows Desktop Search cannot index pdf-files by default so Instant
Search would not return any pdf-file either.
The OP might have chosen an unfortunate example considering it is a 3rd
party format.

Ah, I have both Reader and Acrobat installed, so maybe there are some Adobe
bits in play on my machine that make it work well.
