My computer crashed when I tried to insert clip art - it was the only file
open. Why did this happen?

It might due to your computer memory speed. do some memory test or PC
speed performing test.

I am having the same problem and no, it not a graphics card problem.
When I open powerpoint (or any office app with clipart) and then go to
insert - clipart, the program 'hangs'
I had a quick solution whereby I'd open the organise clips link then the
program seemed to be alright.
The main problem I think is because it is trying to search through the WEB
COLLECTIONS.
Is is possible to disable searching through this folder?
I know it is the web collections because an error message appeared (finally
after much trying) saying:
Clip organiser cannot complete the operation. It is illegal to call out
while inside message filter. - Error code 0x80010005.
From my understanding, this error code is relating to a file location error.
Basically there are connections issues inntermittently with the microsoft
servers, hence not being able to get through to online clipart.
A solution to this would be brilliant, it's really irritating me...

Try this:
On PowerPoint main menu bar, choose Help, Customer Feedback Options
In the dialog that opens, click "Online content"
Remove the check next to "Search online content when connected"
Click OK
