The problem seems disappeared so far after the Network Magic (Pure Networks)
is uninstalled. Thank you for your help.

Zhao

Thanks for the confirmation. I expect that Pure Networks should be aware of
the problem by now and should have a fix available.

I have the same problem in Office 2007 Student & Teacher Edition in Win XP
Pro. I have no 3rd party add-ons.

File was created in native Word 2007 (docx) format. Approximately 45
minutes into an editing session, if I hit Ctrl + S, the file switches to
"Read-Only" and I have to save it as a new file. This happens pretty much
every time (for this particular file). Doesn't happen in other files for
some reason.

I am having this same problem in Word 2007. The document changes to
read-only (with "(read only)" after the name in the title bar, on its own
for no apparent reason. Two facts that might help debug this. It started
doing this after I installed a major update from the Office Update site. I
had also installed Adobe Acrobat Pro 8 a few weeks ago, but the problem did
not start occurring until after the office update.

Post subject: On-Access Scanning [Login to view extended thread Info.]

Hi,

I had the same problem, and found out that it was due to the on-access scanning feature of Sophos anti-virus. I change the settings so that it would not scan the files from the folder I was using and that solved the problem.

I guess it takes priority use and Word then realises that someone else has the file open, resulting in the read only error.

hope this helps you

I am having the same problem with Word. It opens documents with the "read
only" format and I must rename to save it. I am on a network and run XP on
my computer. Other users can open the same files and make changes without
this bug, so I can assume that it can only be a problem with my settings or
program.

Any solutions?

Sounds like a bad third party add-in running on your computer. Check what
you have installed that your colleagues don't have.

I solved this problem on my machine by disabling the Adobe Acrobat PDF Maker
COM add-in. When that add-in is enabled, some of my documents were, on their
own, becoming read-only while open. After disabling that add-in, this
problem no longer occurs.
