How can I change the default "Aligned at" setting from .25 to 0.00. that way
when I start a new document and click the numbering button, it will put the
number in the 1st column. I tried changing it by clicking the numbering
toolbar button, right clicking, selecting bullets and numering, selecting
'customize' and changeing the "aligned at" there and then saving the document
as NORMAL.DOT but this does not seem to work.

How do I change this default setting

You can't. The best solution is to define and use a style that has the
numbers where you want them. You can start with the List Number style, which
has the numbers at the left margin.

So are you saying that when ever I type an email (using Word as the editor)
and I want the numbers at the left margin that I have to go select a style
that I have created or modified (or change it on the ruler, which is wha tI
usually do)

Thanks

Pretty much. Any numbering that is not style-based will never be dependable.
When you click the Numbering button, you get whatever was last used.
