Archived from groups: microsoft>public>word>conversions (more info?)

When I open Word 2007, before I select a file or a blank page, a table is
displayed. The table shows the following:

Convert file from:
Plain text
Encoded text
Rich text format (RTF)
:
Nine more file formats

Is there any way to turn this feature off?

Archived from groups: per prev. post (more info?)

The dialog is responding to the setting Word Options > Advanced > General >
Confirm File Conversion on Open. With that dialog switched off, Word should
only prompt when it does not recognize the file that you are opening as a
Word compatible format. The more interesting question is what unrecognized
file Word is opening on startup that requires conversion?
