Hi,
I am using Word 2002. I tried to insert picture (jpg) to a document. Then, I
cropped the outside border of this picture. Although I did select the option
"Delete cropped areas of the pictures" when compressing the picture, the
file size was not reduced. And I found the cropped area was actually still
there, namely, they were not deleted at all. How can I make it work?

Hi Bill,
On the cropping, did you choose either the 'no change' or a switch to web dpi and then save the document after deleting the crop
portion? There were some issues with this in pre-Word 2003 versions, sometimes closing then reopening the file will help.
How well the compress picture feature works will depend, in part on the version of Word you're using and in part on the content and
type of the graphic file. Word does some compression on its own with graphic files.
For example. If I open a blank document (24KB when saved), insert a 9.2mb BMP photo (which has no compression) and save the Word
file, the saved .doc size is 6.7MB - smaller than just the graphic on its own. If I then compress (Format=>Picture=>[Compress]) at
200ppi it's 369K and if I save the same file with 96 dpi (web/screen) compression the file is 111K.
JPGs and PNGs have their own built in compression (i.e. the size on disk is smaller than the size (amount of memory) used when the
file is opened for viewing or printing). If I insert a 4.8mb photo JPG into a blank word document and save it the Word file is 4.8MB
If I then compress it at 200ppi I was at 250K and the same file at 96 dpi (web/screen) went to 95KB
The compress graphic feature works better when the graphic has a lot of a single color rather than in items that have a wide range
of colors.
Generally, with a JPG you may want to consider doing the cropping/quality reduction in a graphics app such as http://irfanview.com
then inserting into Word as an alternative.

Hi Bob,
Thank you for your advice. But I tried every option in the compress pictures
dialog box. I also tried different picture format like BMP, TIF. It simply
does not work at all! Any idea to fix this problem? We need to do this in
Word in our company. We got a lot of process dealing with picture in Word
enviroment. It is not efficient to handle numerous pictures in other program
prior to Word.
