I'm encountering something very strange and very frustrating. One particular
site, inconveniently the one I'm currently developing, keeps losing
username/password for the FTP after I close DW. It doesn't matter if I have the
'Save' option check(I do), DW forgets the password after I close it.
After doing some googling, I found this was actually a very common bug, and
fixed by the latest DW update. However, the DW update doesn't seem to install
for me. When it gets to the part where it should install, a new dialog appears
over top saying its trying to install Dreamweaver. It does nothing for awhile,
then eventually says "The application you are trying to install is on a CD.
Please put the CD in." Yeah, thanks Windo'hs. After that dialog dies and goes
away, a progress bar blips across the screen, then informs me "Dreamweaver
update 8.2.0 has successfully installed". After loading up DW, it still says
plain old 8.0 in the About screen and splash screen, and the problem persists.
I'm very frustrated. Any advice? |

Interesting. I didn't cancel the DW update, but I may have canceled an
InstallShield for a different application at some point in the past -- I've
seen a similar problem as this in a different situation once before(trying to
install Acrobat). I guess I'll have to re-install.
However, I have quite a bit of site data I want saved. How would I go about
backing this up and reloading it after re-install? I don't have any extensions.
Also, I am using Studio 8. Does that matter? Can I still just uninstall DW8
and reinstall it by itself through the Studio installer? I'm a bit
apprehensive, uninstalls with product suites have always resulted in disaster
for me. |

Have you installed the 8.02 updater?

Use the DW Site Manager to Export all of your site definitions and FTP login
information - you can do all of them in one pass. Or get this excellent
utility and use it -

No.

Yes.

Yes. Well, I tried to a few times. The second half of the second paragraph of
my original posts describes the scenario:
However, the DW update doesn't seem to install for me. When it gets to the
part where it should install, a new dialog appears over top saying its trying
to install Dreamweaver. It does nothing for awhile, then eventually says "The

Thanks Murray. DW uninstall and install went very smoothly, but I'm not sure
what really happened:
1) After re-install, I immediately ran the updater, which appeared to complete
without a problem.
2) I launched DW8
3) DW did not ask for any activation, and all my site definitions were still
there.
4) The About screen still says only 8.0
5) My password is now remembered.
So, I guess my problem is solved? I have doubts that 8.0.2 has been installed
successfully... how would I verify this? As I said the About screen says only
8.0. |

I spoke too soon. It looks like it remembered my login/password only the first
time, immediately after re-install. After using the FTP and closing and
re-opening, the username/password is again gone.
This is more than a little bit frustrating, because I'm sure 8.0.2 would fix
my problem if only it would install! Any more advice?
...sigh, when's CS3 coming out? |

Find the DW executable in the Program Files hierarchy. Right click -
Properties - Version - what number do you see?

I'm monitoring this situation closely because abeall has the identical problem
I have (had). Abeall: I, too, tried downloading 8.0.2 to no avail. But then,
ironically, the login issue disappeared on it's own, would you believe. So...
now I'm in the position of not wanting to do anything. It ain't broke, so I
may not fix it, although I'm an update freak and believe in them, so I'd like
to be able to install the 8.0.2.
The other thing we could do is wait for Updater 8.0.4 or whatever and hope it
downloads easier. This is definitely linked to IE7 because my password/login
issue never appeared until after IE7 was installed. I know this is crazy, but
there were some IE7 MSFT updates after all this surfaced, and then miraculously
the issue disappeard for me. Adobe is saying the cause of all this is related
to issues they have with Installshield and it happens with other software
downloads, although I've never experienced that. But at any rate, I'm
wondering if something concerning DW (or other software) came to the attention
of MSFT after they'd had the IE7 product out there and they quickly came up
with some update of their own that eliminated the DW constant hassle of being
prompted for a login. I'm a novice and only guessing at all this, but in an
attempt for Adobe to get to the bottom of this, I figure any info or help on
the problem that I've experienced might help.
Murray: I've downloaded MM Exporter (our recommendation above) to my desktop
for future use should I have to uninstall. I, too, am petrified of losing even
one iota of any work I have.
Great board... it's good to know of the common problems and hopefully Adobe is
getting on top of this.

Did you know you mentioned that earlier in this thread? At any relate, I
never hit cancel in the course of this entire affair, so it doesn't relate in
that sense, but it certainly is the same behavior I'm getting as far as the
update appearing to install, but isn't.
Airborne Bob -
I would have thought you were crazy to connect IE7 with this issue, but guess
what? I just installed IE7. Problems definitely appeared at the same time. I
also lost my sanity around the same time.
Interestingly, in this episode of opening DW, the user/pass was remembered
with the problem website, but now a different website has forgotten its
password. |

Issue
When installing the Dreamweaver 8 updaters (8.0.1 or 8.0.2) for Windows, if
you cancel the update installation in the middle of the installation process,
you cannot install the updater in the future. If you try to install the updater
at a later time, the updater installer appears to complete successfully, but
when you launch Dreamweaver, it's not the updated version. (Ref. 203720)
Adobe unfortunately continues to link the issue with an assumption that the
user "cancelled the update installation in the middle of the installation
process." This is a little like asking, "When was the last time you beat your
wife?"
It's becoming apparent that in order for this issue to have been "caused" by
us users, there had to have been a hell of a lot of us "cancelling" the update
installation upon initially downloading DW8. One look at this board every day
tells you there must be a lot of us bozos out there or perhaps this is not what
"caused" the problem.
I'm just a little disappointed that Adobe is even going there. What they
should be doing is acknowledging that there is an issue (and they have), but
that by now (and after reading these numerous testimonials to the contrary)
that they need to look for a fix other than saying it was something we "caused"
and we need to uninstall and install. Something else has obviously gone wrong
and by now they need to address this and go in a different direction. |

Here we are in 2009 and I am using Dreamweaver 10 and having the same issue.
Dreamweaver won't save my username/password for FTP for my websites. This is
very frustrating. I am prompted every day to put in a username and password for
every website I work on. I don't see an update for Dreamweaver CS4 (10). Any
ideas on what I can do? |
