Post subject: Welcome Screen Hangs and Crashes
Archived from groups: macromedia>dreamweaver (more info?)

The basic issue: Dreamweaver/Flash hangs indefinitely at the welcome screen
after being opened and cannot be used/ must be forced quit. I can?t click
anything and certainly can use the program.

My System:
Intel Mac Pro
Two 2.66 Ghz Intel Processors
2 GB Ram
ATI X1900 Card with 512 MB Memory
Internet Connection
Operating System: Mac OSX 10.4.9

How to produce the problem:
1. Ensure internet connection is enabled.
2. Open Dreamweaver

Results: Upon opening, Dreamweaver/Flash hangs indefinitely at the welcome
screen. All menus and tool bars load, but the welcome screen displays a blank
box at which point the cursor spins, the program freezes and must be forced
quit.

Normally the welcome screen should load quickly and display the various
document options as well as a link to adobe. (Assuming an internet connection
is available. If not, a static graphic should be displayed in the lower right
corner.) After extensive trouble shooting I narrowed the problem down to the
internet connection. Without an internet connection (Ethernet cable unplugged)
the welcome screen loaded promptly and didn?t hang however the link normally
provided in the lower right hand corner was missing since there was no internet
available. The program then ran normally.

When the internet was connected, the program would load up to the welcome
screen and then hang without displaying any options. No menus were available
and nothing could be done in the program. The only solution at this point was
to force quit.

I spoke with a tech support agent and worked through the majority of the steps
outlined here
(http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/knowledgebase/index.cfm?id=kb401096) to no avail.
As far as I can tell, the issue is caused by the welcome screen failing to
access the internet content necessary to load. I was able to disable the
welcome screen by disconnecting the internet, opening Dreamweaver/Flash,
disabling it via the options, and then reconnecting the internet. However, this
of course prevents the use of the welcome screen, a feature I find useful.

Notes: The welcome screen for Illustrator and InDesign load flawlessly and
quickly and are not affected by the internet connection.

Has anyone else experienced this? Adobe?s tech agent told me it might be an
issue with my internet, but I doubt that is the case. I have submitted a bug
report to adobe, but was curious if anyone else had found a solution or had any
idea why this is happening. Why can Illustrator and InDesign load the web links
and not Flash and Dreamweaver.

I know the welcome screen is hardly a ?necessary? feature, but considering the
price one pays for this software, it would be nice if it worked.

Has anyone had an issue at all similar to this? Did I get a bad copy of the software?

You may have. Have you tried reinstalling it?

I have indeed. Not a full reinstall, just Flash and Dreamweaver, the two programs having issues with the welcome screen.

Update:

The cause of the problem is my router. I am using a Linksys WRT54G Wireless
v5.0. When I bypass the router (Connect directly from the modem to the
internet) I have no issue opening Flash or Dreamweaver. (The internet content
on the welcome screen loads.)

I have an old D-Link Router (DI-604) which also seems to work fine. I have no
idea what "settings" might be wrong on the linksys router since I have never
heard of port forwarding for adobe products.

Roy128, are you satisfied with your workaround?

I ask because I too am experiencing this exact problem with my Airport Extreme
and I'm not satisfied with the work around. I (as others) depend heavily on
wireless technology and a solution (not a workaround) should be provided by
Adobe. Don't you think?

I've talked with tech reps from each group Dreamweaver/Flash (apparently their
knowledge base lies only within a single app and not the entire suite) and
aside from trashing prefs and doing reinstalls they're perplexed.

Seeking a solution. Will post again as I find more.

It's not a great workaround at all, In fact, I am still trying to find a better
and more feasible solution since we have a few computers on the home network
and connecting directly to the internet prevents any of those machines from
using the web since you loose the router.

I called the apple store and they said they use Airport Extremes and do not
have any issues with the welcome pages on their machines. Unfortunately, I
purchased an airport extreme (haven?t set it up yet) hoping it would work, but
it sounds like you are having the same issue. I agree that adobe should
acknowledge the issue and I too have run into the limited scope of the tech
support. As you said, they provide support based on the specific applications
and don?t seem to address cross suite issues. I am still waiting on a call from
a Level 2 tech who will hopefully be more helpful.

My ISP is Comcast but, as you mentioned it's looking like an issue of app
interaction with the router security protocols.

I've installed the latest updates to my Airport Extreme and still no go. It
may be some other setting I have to noodle with in the configurations panel
(Security, channel settings ?)

What OS are you operating in?

I am running OSX 10.4.9. I may give the apple store a call later and ask them what they would recommend. I am still waiting on a call from the Tier 2 tech.

I just installed my new CS2 Web Standard suite on Windows. The Dreamweaver
welcome screen refuses to open, with or without the Internet connection
available. I can use DW9, I just cannot get the welcome screen. I have only a
blank white rectangle where it should be.

Any suggestions? I am running WinXP SP2.

dehelias, this is my problem also.

I can use Dreamweaver just fine, but no welcome screen.

I see that these posts were written months ago. I would expect that Adobe have
a solution by now but I haven't seen one.

I had lots of problems installing this software. I still can't install
Soundbooth. For the price they are charging we should not be having these
problems.

Has anyone come up with any solution yet that does not involve a complicated
work around? My ISP is also Comcast. I am using Windows XP professional with
Service pack 2.

I also am having this issue and it seems to span releases from MX thru CS4.
You would think the price we pay for this vital piece of software (I have CS4
Web Premium Suite) that they could address this issue.

******BUG******
Concise problem statement:
I click on an external link in Welcome Screen and receive an error - Invalid
path.
Steps to reproduce bug:
1. Open Dreamweaver
2. Click on any item that is directed to an HTTP location. i.e. Any item in
right column "Top Features (videos) or any links in the bottom panel.

Results: I receive an error such as: C:\Progam Files\Adobe
Dreamweaver\CS4\http:\\www.adobe.com\do\dw10iview Contains an invalid path.
Notice the forward slashes in the link:
Expected results: I should be directed to as HTTP address.

I am able to access those addresses manually.

I have tried with both IE7 and Firefox 3.5 set as default browser with same
results.

I have recreated the user configuration file with no effect.

This makes me wonder what is happening to the link and how it might affect
other services in your application.
