I have used DW on Vista for about a year now and have never had this
problem.

Hello everyone,
I'm also experiencing such an issue. Running XP Pro with Dreamweaver
CS3.
All I do is to directly open up the file with DW. No site or remote
server. Everything's local and I have full administrator rights.

Every once in a while (it happens completely randomly it seems), I'll
get this error message saying "Access to [path]\MFC###.tmp was
denied.". Thankfully, I always tried saving again, so I never actually
lost a file because of it. It seems like Dreamweaver is first saving
your new file as a TMP, then deletes the original file and renames the
TMP. However, there's something that's stopping DW from completing
this sequence right after the original is deleted. I'm pretty sure
it's also built to automatically remove any leftover TMP file, which
would explain why the files disappear.

The issue is: how to fix it? I've tried this solution about the
selecting/deselecting and it does not do anything. I even closed the
Explorer window. However, I've just tried stopping Kaspersky... Seems
like it could be the issue. Tried saving multiple times with it
deactivated and I never had a bug. Reactivating it produces the error
after a couple of tries. I'm guessing Kaspersky scans the files that
are modified and locks them up for that time, making DW unable to do
anything with them and bug out. You may want to try deactivating your
A/V and see if that's the issue. I'll keep you all informed on my own
situation, but no matter what it is an irritating bug which should be
corrected by Adobe ASAP...

I have seen this bug on DW8 AND on DW9(currently using).
I have seen this problem on Vista Ultimate 64-bit=DW8 and on Vista Home
Premium 32-bit=DW9.

Reading over this entire thread it seems the problem is only apparent on
Vista, I've seen it in both versions, and for me it is random because I haven't
tested the Ctrl+S spam method to see if it reoccurs for me.

Working on a CSS file, 4 hours into the workday, after numerous saves, the
same "access denied cannot read to %$$%dkfjsdkla.tmp" error shows up, the file
won't save, and upon closing it is completely removed from my computer.
Personally, every single time this has happened to me it was my stylesheet.css
file (for different websites). The first 2 times it happened to a css file that
was never even defined in a site; just a single file I was editing.

At the time this happens, the css file was around 2kb.

I'm currently working on a very important project and just lost my stylesheet
that's going to take 2 full workdays to rebuild. I haven't backed up yet
because it's only been 3 days on the project and I didn't think this .tmp error
would follow over to this newer version of DW. Unfortunately, no matter how
resistant you are to believe the error exists, it is there.

I bet adobe denies the 8,192-byte DW crash anomally with equal resistance too.
That one, too, is 100% reproducable and SO strange Smile

You lose. They have admitted it as soon as it was described to them.

I am also having this problem with the Dreamweaver CS3 and Vista combo.

\\[path]\dev\website\intranet\MFC4295.tmp contains an invalid path.

I hit Ctrl+S once and get that, then I hit it again and it brings up the Save
As menu because it has deleted the file and it needs to be saved again. I am
using the site manager.

I am not selecting a file in an explorer window, as suggested by somebody.

Has anybody found a workable solution?

I am experiencing the same problem, but only with .css files. I am using DW CS3
with Vista Home Premium. I have read the entire thread and cannot find any
reasonable solution. My temporary solution has been to frequently (every 10
minute or so) save my .css file to a flash drive. I would like to see this
resolved as soon as possible. Is Adobe working on this problem and how will we
know when a solution is available?

Regards,

Elaine

This is almost certainly not an Adobe problem.

Can someone refer me to a support site or IT professional who can help me with
this? When I go to the Microsoft Windows Vista page and search for Dreamweaver,
all they provide is a link to the Adobe site. We all spend a lot of time and
money on this software. Can't we cooperate a little to get this solved or am I
just wasting my time on this forum?

Thank you.

We don't know what "this" is. There are many of us here who not only use
DWCS3 all day every day, but who also come very close to reading every post,
and I have to say, your symptoms have never happened to me, nor have I ever
seen it posted here before. In addition, I speak to a great many peers
about using DW all the time, and I have never heard any of them complain
about this kind of thing.

I'm very confident that if this were a DW problem we would have heard of it
before now.

Anyhow, please give us a set of steps to reproduce the problem so that we
can see it happen, and if it's demonstrable, we'll pass it along to the
engineers....

Sorry Elaine, but this topic is apparently a pissing contest between Microsoft
and Adobe, neither willing to admit the problem is on their end. Like was
mentioned before it sounds like a Vista-related permissions glitch that is
preventing Dreamweaver from accessing it's data when you attempt to save the
file, so it won't properly save. For the time being, the only fix is that when
this occurs, save the file as a DIFFERENT NAME using "save as..." otherwise you
will lose the entire file. Even using a file recovery tool I was unable to
locate the file once it disappears. Community forums are supposed to be
helpful, so less ego's and more insight would be a refreshing change, admins.

There are no admins here. We're all just users, like you. We help when we
can. We don't mollycoddle. If you have a problem with a post, spit it out.
We can take it.

The truth is that the symptoms are unknown to us here. If you can give us a
set of steps to reproduce the problem we will try to do so.

NiemiOn

did you ever find an answer to this? I have the exact same issue happening on
one of my pc's. We run Dreamweaver CS3 on macs & pcs and all the pcs are XP.
Only one machine has this issue. Ignore everyone else telling your crazy, it's
them. if you read thru the entire thread, you'll see other people saying they
have the same problem but yet no one has any ideas of how to fix it. We have to
select "Save As" everytime we want to save. And yes, Dreamweaver DELETES the
file, not me, not you, not some monster in the machine. It's documented, just
without any fixes. Please let me know if you found a way to fix it.

??

Please provide reproducible steps and details of the dreamweaver site
definition such as where is the local site folder/remote and so on. And that
if it's only happening on 1 of 3 machines, what guess do you have about what
is different about THAT machine or site definition.

Other than a few "me too" posts to an old thread, this is NOT a documented
problem.

If it is a problem, you (and any others clinging to this thread) will have
to provide steps to replicate it so that it can be investigated and possibly
fixed.

Loss of data is a very high priority with the developers afaik.

Post subject: Re: DW CS3 deletes your files

I am experiencing a similar problem, although my CSS files are getting locked
instead of deleted. I am using XP Pro, CS3 on a Gateway laptop, and I have been
using DW for about 4 years ( I still have DW8 on the same PC, never had this
problem).

Here are two images, the first is the error message saying Access Denied...
http://www.garydarling.net/images/dreamweaverCS3error.gif

The second is the message I get after doing a Save As..., and then trying to
reopen the original file that has the padlock next to it.
http://www.garydarling.net/images/dwCS3filenotfound.gif

I've right-clicked on the file, but the selection titled Turn off Read Only is
grayed out. In the past I have turned off the machine and perhaps the next day
the file is accessible again, but I cannot repeat this at the moment. I have
deleted and reloaded DW, but it still occurs. The one thing I have noticed in
common with this thread is that after reloading the index.html file I was
working on in Firefox, the browser hung, 'Waiting for Localhost...', so I
stopped it. Then I went back to DW and made a couple changes to the CSS file,
only to have the Access Denied message pop up.

Any clues?

I've not got an answer, but it seems that when this happens, you still have the
file affected open. If that is the case, then to prevent the loss of work I
would suggest copying the html from the code window and pasting it into a
notepad document. At least that way you can save the work you have been doing
before you have to close the window.

It's not ideal I know, but it's better than losing it?
