Post subject: DW CS3 deletes your files
Archived from groups: macromedia>dreamweaver (more info?)

I didn't believe it when I first saw this. I had created this local folder on
my computer yesterday containing a .html a folder with my .css and a folder
with all the images.

Several times I got the message working in DW CS3 "Access denied" when I
tried to save my files. The funny thing is that when I get this message, the
file is not only write-protected it's non-existent! It's gone. Deleted.
Dreamweaver CS3 deleted not only my .html but the whole folder including style
sheets and images.

What in Gods name have you guys done to Dreamweaver? I have lost 12h of work
because of this fag program. My platform is Vista.

DW doesn't delete files. You do.

Please tell me if you are editing files directly on the server, or if you
are working in a local site.

If the latter, please tell me if the local site is on your local computer,
or if it's on a remote, shared hard drive on your LAN.

Is it possible that files/folders were moved outside of Dreamweaver?
Maybe the files/folders are still on your hard drive, but moved to a new
location that DW doesn't know about. Can you navigate your file system
(through the Vista Desktop or Windows Explorer) and locate your
files/folders? How about using Vista's SEARCH feature to locate files
that may have been moved? If they truly have been deleted, have you
tried a file recovery program, like the wonderful and free PC Inspector
from Convar.com? If your files are still on your drive (or can be
recovered) you may just need to redefine your DW site definition.

Also, check the Recycle Bin.

that sounds like you opened a new blank unsaved file, worked on it, and
tried to save it with a filename that already existed in that folder.

when dw said "you can't" i'm sure the reason it wouldn't save the file was
given in the dialog box.

if you then closed the window and clicked cancel to the save/cancel prompt,
the file you were working on doesn't exist.

Of course! Never overlook the obvious! Smile

But that shouldn't throw an error. There would be a prompt to overwrite
the existing file.

The .html disappeared yesterday, but the .css and the images where still on the
HD.

This morning, when I opened DW CS3, it told me that the whole folder
containing all the files, was missing. My computer is not infected with virus.

I can tell you this without being the slightest in doubt: I didn't delete the
files myself!

I'm working locally, not LAN, but on my won personal computer. I will search
my computer for the folders / files, but I doubt they are somewhere to find. I
have looked through the thrash, it's not there.

The .html disappeared this way:

I was editing it in DW CS3 and made some small unimportant changes. When I
exited DW it prompted me the usual "You want to save?". I said yes, DW said
"you can't", I say what the heck, I have only made small changes, so I just
cancel. But I should have saved it as something else than index.html because
when I tried to open index.html it wasn't there.

Only Opera, Warcraft III TFT, DW CS3 and PS CS3 was open.

It is helpful to state the entire error message DW displayed. I don't
think the error you saw was "you can't". Knowing the exact error helps
us troubleshoot your problem.

There are many reasons why you were not able to save. Maybe the file
attributes were changed (somehow) to READ ONLY. Maybe you had multiple
copies of the same file open. Maybe you developed bad sectors on your
hard drive. Maybe the file was moved from its original location after it
was opened in DW. Knowing the exact error message would help.

At this point, I think the import thing is to get your files back. Any
luck with the file search, recycle bin, or recovery software?

I created a new HTML file. Saved it as index.html and I made a lot of changes
and saved it many times, viewing the outcome in Opera, IE7 and Firefox 2.0.

It was the only .html file in the folder and certainly the only index.html
file in the folder.

I will write the exact error message here as soon as it pops up again. Right
now the computer is doing a deep anti-virus scan from outside windows so I have
to wait to investigate further until then.

There IS a prompt. It's when I say "yes" to overwrite the existing file the
error prompt pops up. I can't overwrite it. I can save it as somethingelse.html
but not the same filename.

1] Is the file opened somewhere else? In another program? In a text
editor? In a browser? In Dreamweaver?

2] Is the file READ ONLY?

how are you opening the file??

suggestion- use the dreamweaver Files Panel.
Doubleclick on the file to open it.
type blahblah
File-->Save
should work silently with no prompts or dialog boxes at all.

dreamweaver would not change folder names or change which folder the file is
saved to without User input.
