It's happening with my PowerPC G5, and my brand new Intel Core 2 Duo notebook.
It locks up right after I open the program and I try to do anything. Even if I
try to open a menu it locks up. I can't even work. It also happens even if I
have all of my other programs closed.

I think that Adobe should give out some free serial numbers for GoLive 9, so that all of these users at least have software that they can use to get their work done...... just a thought....

Same problems here.

Win XP Pro, Intel Core 2 2.40GHz, 2GB Ram.

The freezes almost seem random for me, I maybe looking at a page in ie or
firefox, go back to Dreamweaver and it goes all white.

One factor maybe my dual monitors, I keep dreamweaver on the right monitor,
but when I get this freeze it expands across both.

Anyway, please sort this out. (Sorting out CSS rendering might be nice)

I think I have a clue - at least to the "lagging menus" issue.

I just installed CS3 on a 8-core Mac Pro yesterday. I found that Dreamweaver
was almost unusable because the slow menu problem. I'd click on a menu and it
would take up to two or three seconds fro the menu to drop down. Mouse down to
an item in that menu - another long lag before it would highlight. And so on.
Very frustrating, and hard to get anything done.

Reading this thread, I noticed the post about a lot of network traffic to do
with lock files. Well, the site I'm working on has zillions of files at the
root level (don't ask - it was set up that way by the original developer) and
many, many of them are checked out by me or by my colleagues.

So I tried collapsing the root folder in the Files window, so only the folder
itself is showing - no enclosed files or subfolders. And waddya know? All
menus are suddenly responsive, no lags or slowdowns.

Obviously this isn't an optimal way too work - but I guess one could use Open
and Browse dialogs instead of the file window and the whip for a while until
this gets sorted out.

Does anyone know if there's a preference anywhere to prevent Dreamweaver from
constantly polling the server about lock files and check-out status? That
might be a solution.

Hope this helps.

I doubt that, I use 2 monitors - main app on one monitor with most of the
floating panels on the other and I haven't had any problems with 'freezing'.

Well I downloaded and installed DW 8.02 and it does take a little time (25
seconds) to load the page but works fine so I can now used this until Adobe
give us a fix for DW CS3

Support did phone me back (thank you) but when I return there call they say
"Support will open Monday at 9 to 6am" I also when and got one more GB of ram
(I will have two in total) so I let you know if this helps the slowness!

I tried it, and at first I thought it was working. Then, two seconds later DW CS3 was back to its good old self again with the freezing.

I have added another 1GB of RAM so i know have 2GB RAM and it made no different
at all.

HOWEVER Bill is right the software does not work well pulling the files of
your server

I have header and footer files loading on all the pages I work on so I can see
what the design will look like I also upload the files as I work so my client
can see progress.

I updated the path if the images to point to my local machine (not to the
images I already have online already) I am working on and DREAMWEAVER works
like a dream!! I just need to put the true paths back after I have completed
the job! (it is going to be a pain when I am doing editing after the the site
is complete.)

However if you have had to stop work this is a fix that work for me!

Another one is download DW 8 and use that until Adobe get us hard working
webmasters a fix!

I am advising all my clients not to buy Dreamweaver CS3. Nobody should pay
$400 for such a lemon. I suggest that Adobe make Dreamweaver 8 available for
$200 so that people can buy it and upgrade to CS3 once it becomes a useful
product. Otherwise people will get their Dreamweaver 8 from "less reputable"
sources and Adobe won't get a dime. In this case, they deserve it. Did
anybody bother testing this thing before release?

They unfortunately don't have a public beta program, so the testers are a
pretty select core group.

Microsoft's new one. Expression Web. Download it's trial and give it a
whirl.

I must say they have good tech support via phone!!

Ok like a temp Solution????

See
http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=kb401608&sliceId=2

See http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/search/index.cfm?loc=en_us&term=tn_16104

Issue

Some Intel-based Macintosh users are reporting performance problems with Adobe
Dreamweaver CS3. Some of the symptoms include Dreamweaver freezing for 2-60
seconds when opening files and performing basic actions in the Dreamweaver user
interface, like typing text, selecting table elements, and scrolling up and
down.

There are two scenarios where this problem occurs:

* You are using a remote server as the Local Root Folder in the Site
Definition and your files have several images.
* You are using your local hard drive as the Local Root Folder in the Site
Definition and your files have several images or have external images
referenced with absolute paths.

(Ref. 227126, 227108, 227272)
Reason

Dreamweaver CS3 has a problem processing images with certain files on
Intel-based Macs. The more images the file contains, the more noticeable the
problem is. If you can reproduce this problem with a page that does not contain
any images, then this TechNote does not address the problem you are seeing.
Solution

Adobe is aware of this problem and is researching it. Dreamweaver CS3 has a
native binary for Intel-based Macs, so in general it is much faster than
previous versions of Dreamweaver on Intel-based Macs, but there appears to be
an image processing problem with some setups.

Solution 1

If you are using a remote machine as the Local Root Folder in your Site
Definition, use a folder on your local hard drive as the Local Root Folder.

Solution 2

If your pages contain external images, try deselecting View > Display External
Files. External images have absolute URLs for the src path, for example:
http://www.example.com/images/logo.gif.

Solution 3

Run Dreamweaver in Rosetta mode. You will lose performance gains in tasks like
startup time, menu response, etc., but the problem described in this TechNote
should stop. To run Dreamweaver in Rosetta mode, perform these steps:

1. In the Finder, browse to Applications/Adobe Dreamweaver CS3/Dreamweaver.
2. Select the Dreamweaver application and choose File > Get Info.
3. In the General section, select "Open using Rosetta".

Solution 4

If none of the scenarios above apply to you, please contact Adobe Tech
Support. When contacting Tech Support, please provide answers to the following
questions:

* If you open a page with no images, does the problem still occur?
* For users that have an FTP server connection in their site definition:
if you disconnect from the FTP server, does the problem still occur?
* If you collapse all of the folders in the Files panel, does the problem
still occur?

Additional Information

For more information on Dreamweaver for Macintosh troubleshooting, see the
following TechNotes:

* "Troubleshooting system errors or freezes in Dreamweaver (8, CS3 on Mac
OS X)" (TechNote kb401096)
* "Slow system performance using Dreamweaver" (TechNote tn_16104)
