Post subject: Annoying putting dependent files on save
Archived from groups: macromedia>dreamweaver (more info?)

Does anyone know how to STOP Dreamweaver CS2 from putting dependent files up on
an FTP site? If I wanted to put them I would! I've checked the "Prompt on
put/check-in but there's no prompt? Every time on a simple save DreamWeaver
saves 15 files. Annoying as Hell!!!

Any help appreciated before ditching DreamWeaver...

Let's start at the beginning. When you look at the SITE name in the list of
sites in the file panel, do you see a folder icon, or two offset CPUs?

If the former, then you are working on a local site, and the solution would
be different than if the latter.

If the latter, you are working directly on the server.

Let's get this set first, and then we can take you from there.

Edit > Preferences > Site

prompt on put / check in

If that doesn't work try hitting the F1 key and typing "dependent" in the search box for help

Hello "ACE" - I'm working directly on the server via FTP setup in Dreamweaver...

As I mentioned in my first post, the checkbox under File/Preferences for
Prompt on put/ check in does not seem to have any affect.

I really don't recommend working directly on the server unless you are an
expert user of HTML and can take the chance of overwriting your only backup
files. Are you? Why are you working on the server instead of the usual
local site?

This server is my local site. I have 12 servers to develop on. As far as
being an expert user of HTML, that's relative I guess, but I've been doing this
over 20 years and a couple of books under my belt Wink I'm new to the Mac and
Dreamweaver. I've always been using a text editor (Homesite, TopStyle or
Eclipse) for HTML/CSS and can't seem to find a replacement. I've been
developing on Windows and Linux forever.

I just want to know how to stop Dreamweaver from doing things it shouldn't,
like putting my files when I didn't want them to be. Is this possible?

Additionally, this application is in CakePHP and Dreamweaver doesn't recognize
the THTML extensions in Cake regardless of adding the file extension in the
preferences. Do I need to switch to Eclipse for the Mac?

If you would change from having these sites be FTP & RDS to just FTP with a
truly local site folder on your machine, this problem will go away and dw
will do sitewide operations much faster. And you'll have a local copy of the
files to CYA. You will have to put or upload the changed files vs. just
doing a save.

You need to edit some files to add a new file extension:

take note of where the files will be, edit the files in the Configuration
folder for YOU as a User, not the main set of files.

There are no dependent files when you are working directly on the server.
There is no local site. You are working on the server.

There isn't. That's why this is not a good option for someone who is not
experienced enough to edit the live files.

Are you serious there is no way to work on the server directly to view and save
a file without dreamweaver interfering and putting dependent files?

I dont even see an option to set up a local folder when working directly on
the server with FTP.

What am I missing here?
